Acoustic Treatment

Acoustic treatment is the application of absorptive, diffusive, and reflective materials to room surfaces to control reverberation, improve speech intelligibility, reduce noise levels, and optimize the listening environment. Treatment is designed based on the room’s purpose, volume, and existing acoustic conditions. Common treatment types include absorptive panels and ceiling tiles (to reduce RT60), diffusers (to improve spatial uniformity), bass traps (to control room modes), and reflectors (to direct useful early reflections). Effective acoustic treatment addresses the full frequency range from 125 Hz to 4000 Hz and considers both the amount and placement of materials. Over-treatment can make a room feel dead and uncomfortable. Treatment specifications are derived from target reverberation times defined in applicable standards (ISO 3382-2, ANSI S12.60, BB93). The cost of acoustic treatment typically ranges from 2–10% of the total construction budget for purpose-designed spaces.
