Basotect (Melamine Foam)

Basotect is BASF’s brand name for open-cell melamine resin foam, widely used as a premium acoustic absorber. It offers excellent mid-to-high frequency absorption (NRC 0.85–1.00 at 50 mm thickness with air gap) combined with superior fire resistance (Euroclass B-s1,d0 without additional treatment). Basotect is significantly lighter than mineral wool (approximately 9 kg/m³) and can be cut, shaped, and painted without losing acoustic performance. It is used in acoustic baffles, ceiling clouds, wall panels, and industrial silencers. The material does not emit fibers, making it suitable for clean environments. Its high cost compared to polyurethane foam is justified in commercial, healthcare, and public buildings where fire certification is mandatory. Basotect panels are tested per ISO 354 and are available from numerous acoustic product manufacturers who fabricate it into finished panels and shapes.
