D50 Measurement

D50 measurement involves extracting the Definition (Deutlichkeit) parameter from a measured room impulse response. D50 is the ratio of early energy (0–50 ms) to total energy, expressed as a percentage, as defined in ISO 3382-1:2009 §4.4. It correlates strongly with speech intelligibility: higher D50 values indicate clearer speech reproduction. The 50 ms boundary is based on the psychoacoustic integration time for speech perception, where reflections arriving within 50 ms reinforce the direct sound. D50 values above 0.50 (50%) are generally considered acceptable for speech, with values above 0.65 preferred for classrooms and lecture halls. Measurement requires accurate impulse responses with proper time windowing and sufficient dynamic range. D50 is complementary to C50 (the logarithmic version) and is typically reported alongside STI and RT60 in speech-critical room assessments. Spatial averaging across multiple positions is required per ISO 3382-1.

Formula

D50 = ∫₀⁰⁵ h²(t)dt / ∫₀∞ h²(t)dt
